Cantharone Treatment
Often a solution called cantharidin (Cantharone or Cantharone Plus) is used to treat warts and molluscum contagiosum. Cantharidin is a blister beetle extract that works by irritating the lesion and forming a blister under it. The goal is to have the wart or molluscum “peel off” with the blister roof.
Please Note: Cantharone is not FDA approved and is purchased from a Canadian supplier. However, this is a common, safe and minimally painful procedure used by dermatologists for many years.
With this treatment, the doctor "paints" the chemical onto the wart. Most people don't feel any pain when the chemical is applied to the wart. A blister usually occurs within 24 hours of application.
What you can expect:
4 HOURS - Mild discomfort may occur. Remove the Bandaid 4-8 hours after treatment. Wash the area gently with soap and water as you are washing the rest of your body. Apply Vaseline, Aquaphor or antibacterial ointment to the treated area a few times a day to keep the wound moist. The desire is to prevent any scab formation. (Continue this until the blister falls off).
24 HOURS – Blister usually formed within 24 hours. Some minimal pain and itching may develop. Try not to pop the blister. The blister can act as a natural bandaid while the skin beneath is healing. Popping the blister and picking at the spot increase the risk of scarring and infection.
4-14 DAYS – Crusted lesions fall off and (hopefully) the lesion falls off with it. Some mild redness may remain. If any of the wart remains, resume treatment with over the counter wart remover until you see the doctor again.
Dr Rosenberger will see you back in 2-4 weeks to evaluate the need for retreatment.
If you develop any more than a 1 inch rim of redness around the wound OR if you develop any persistent yellow oozing OR if you develop any foul odor in the wound. Please call the office and ask to be seen as soon as possible for a wound check.
